Christian, aged 31, from Rotherham, left school with few qualifications and went into the motor trade. But he is now enjoying a fresh start having gained a place as an apprentice at Shepcote Engineering on Prince of Wales Road, Darnall.
"It was scary when I was made redundant but luckily for me things turned out really well and my job loss became a new opportunity," he said.
Since joining Shepcote Engineering Christian has completed basic skills in numeracy and literacy. Next he moved onto an NVQ Level 2 in Performing Engineering Operations.
Christian is now studying at college one day a week on an adult apprenticeship and is completing an NVQ Level 3 in CNC Machinery and wants to learn welding skills next.
