Hydraulic cylinders for a new £4.2m bridge

Shepcote Engineering won the contract to design and manufacture hydraulic cylinders for a new £4.2m pedestrian and cycling bridge.

Conceived as both an iconic attraction as well as an additional crossing in Rhyl, it joins up Denbighshire and Conwy and bridges a gap in the National Cycle Route to form part of the Wales coastal path. The Pont y Draig (Dragons Bridge) spans 80m over the Clwyd Estuary connecting Rhyl to Kinmel Bay.

Working with our partners Davy Markham, Shepcote Engineering designed and manufactured hydraulic cylinders employed to lower and lock the two 32 meter spans in place. The two main lift rams were double acting type with 200mm bore x 140mm rod x 2,700mm stroke cylinders.

A 4m extension piece to the rear section was also required to give the lift required.
